IN RESPONSE TO: Battle of the Seals

Honestly Charkoth, this is just ridiculous. Conservatism implies -nothing- about one`s emotional state. I could go ahead and list thousands of examples, but I don`t even feel like I should need to. Emotional crazies are on both sides.

The clear-cut reason you can`t admit this is because you`re letting your political views cloud your rationality. Just because someone disagrees with you doesn`t mean they aren`t rational or that they`re being controlled by some nefarious, ambiguous (non-existent) third party with emotions.

"Emotional people are funny, and conservatives by definition are not very emotional."

I don`t know where you`re getting that from. Ever watch Glenn Beck? Ever listen to Limbaugh? Or, really, any conservative preacher? Compare and contrast with my favorite talking heads: Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

Granted, that`s not a fair comparison since its rather apples to oranges. But I know WAAYYY more liberals who watch Stewart and Colbert than Olbermann, while most of my strongly conservative friends watch or listen to at least one crazy talking head.

IN RESPONSE TO: 59 Days to Decide: Evidence Mounts That Dems Are Facing Midterm Wipeout

I`d be cool with a moderate GOP House, which could conceivably lead to some sort of actual compromises (remember those?!) As is, I fear we won`t do anything about the deficit, and energy reform (go nuclear power!) will continue to fade from reality....

Sorry I haven`t added anyone yet. It`s a real pain in the ass. I`ll try to pull this off sometime this week.

IN RESPONSE TO: 59 Days to Decide: Evidence Mounts That Dems Are Facing Midterm Wipeout

"Yeah and getting rid of the tax cuts and losing more jobs helps too."
The Dems may allow the tax cuts to expire at the end of the year. However, the job losses certainly had nothing to do with any Democrat tax increases.. mostly because the Dems, up until this point, lowered taxes. They are currently at the lowest point in 60 years....

"We need the Republican party to go back to it`s conservative roots"
Yea, back to the Conservative roots of Lincoln! Wait, no, that doesn`t really work... Okay, the Conservative roots of Roosevelt! Wait.. no.. not really. Eisenhower! No... Nixon! No... Reagan! Only with rose-tinted glasses, as he supported what would be today called amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants. The federal payroll rose under Reagan, while it fell under Clinton. He also bailed out Social Security with over 100 billion dollars, raised taxes several times (although he opened his first term with a significant tax cut), and expanded EITC (which essentially is a handout to poor people). George H. W. Bush was hardly a Conservative, as he attacked Reagan`s "conservative economics" as "voodoo economics." He also raised taxes and refused to get involved in nation-building in Iraq.

So... what are your conservative roots? Goldwater maybe? At least he was an economic conservative! However, he was also in favor of abortion rights, gay rights, and medical marijuana. He also said, in the early 90`s, "When you say "radical right" today, I think of these moneymaking ventures by fellows like Pat Robertson and others who are trying to take the Republican party and make a religious organization out of it. If that ever happens, kiss politics goodbye."

    Where were these Conservative roots?

    IN RESPONSE TO: New Computer?

As a sidenote, I just checked out my RAM usage on my W7 64-bit laptop. With just a few relatively minor programs running (i.e., winamp, a pdf, Word, Firefox), I am already up to 1.7 gb of memory used.

    A few notes:
    1. Upgrade RAM immediately. 4gb if you have 32 bit 7, more if you can afford it and you have 64 bit 7....
    2. If that doesn`t solve the problem, then cut down on programs running the background, run ccleaner, and defrag.
    3. If that doesn`t do it, it`s probably a problem with the PSU.
    4. Your vidcard is getting a little old, but it should still be able to perform above average. I wouldn`t worry about upgrading until you upgrade your whole PC, which really shouldn`t be necessary for another two years. You -may- want to upgrade your vidcard late next year if the timing is right in terms of price and generation, but I still wouldn`t upgrade the rest of your PC for another year after. http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html - Notice that your vidcard is still relatively high even on the HIGH END vid card list.
    5. Your CPU is great. Don`t replace it. http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html - Yeah, it`s down the list a bit, but these are ONLY high end cpus. In a list of all CPUs, it`d still be in the top like 10 percentile. In comparison, my brand new (900 dollar with a pretty great sale!) laptop cpu (i5 430m) is about on par with your cpu.
    6. In general, you don`t need to upgrade CPU`s very often, especially if you start with a solid, top of the line Intel CPU. Games are highly reliant on video cards, so you should be more flexible there. Always take RAM to your PC`s limit, as it`s so dirt cheap.

For the love of God, upgrade your ram to at least 4 gb. If you have 64 bit, I might even push it further. Also, get CCleaner or something and clean out any garbage. Change your settings if you have too many programs running at once. With your videocard and cpu, you should be EASILY running SC2 with max settings. I have almost the same video card (9800 GTX, which is essentially the same card and I was using an 8800 GT before that with mostly similar results) and a waaaay worse CPU (athlon X2 5400+), and I run SC2 with max settings. I only run into problems on some of the crazier custom maps. I never have any problems with standard melee or single player.

"4 GB wont help him at all"
What OS do you use? It may make little difference in XP, for example, but it could be a HUGE difference in 7.

"You bottleneck could be your hard drives on the load time, or your CPU, or graphics card in game."
It`s certainly not the CPU, as that`s a good CPU. It`s a bit outdated, but it`s still better than all but the new, top line Athlon stuff. Hard drives are usually not a bottleneck for gaming unless he has like a 5400 RPM or something silly like that. I highly doubt its the vidcard, as I have almost the same card....

"Another trick I used to speed up my SCII install was defragging my hard drive."
I agree 100%. Download CCleaner, clean out temp files, then defrag your drive. If you have too much running simultaneously, take care of that before doing this. I would try to defrag only after taking care of anything that would majorly change your file structure, as, otherwise, you`d probably want to defrag again.

Honestly though, this is almost CERTAINLY a RAM problem. 2gb of ram with Windows 7 is just about criminal, especially when it costs about 90 bucks to get 4 gig of top-shelf, gaming quality ram.

IN RESPONSE TO: California about to ban plastic bags

To be clear, though, I don`t really care one way or the other. I certainly wouldn`t expend political capital to ban plastic shopping bags, and I think it`s a waste of time. I also don`t think it will really affect anyone`s quality of life, however.

IN RESPONSE TO: California about to ban plastic bags

"Just make all bag forms available and let the free market decide."

The free market can`t solve problems like this. The free market will choose a solution based on price, ease of usability, etc., while any environmental costs will disappear from the model entirely.

In fact, the free market can`t really solve any environmental problem. What it can do, however, is shift most of the burden of environmental problems on to poor people.

Our God given right to plastic is being taken away!

Meanwhile, it`s okay for the government to stop minorities from building religious buildings.

The State is a sinking ship.

When did the Cordoba House people kill 3000 Americans? Did I miss something when I wasn`t paying attention?

It`s called the First Amendment. You should look it up some time.

IN RESPONSE TO: The new Mosque

"I`m glad I`m not the only one noticing this. It`s so strange to me that everyday American liberals (who often were raised Christian) froth at the mouth to attack Christian religions at any chance, asserting their atheism, only to go way out of their way to defend Muslims. The single most oppressive and intolerant religious group in the world, without question."

Call me when you hear about Atheists stopping people from building a Church. Pretty much anywhere.

We get pissed when you try to get all high-and-mighty on us. Listen, you can say Under God in the pledge. That`s fine. I won`t though. Because I don`t believe in God, which is my right as an American. These people do believe in a God, which should put them in your camp. However, you`re too busy blaming them for something they didn`t do to understand that they are not that much different from any of you. Especially the moderates in charge of this building....

You can talk about it being insensitive, but it`s not that close to the site. If it was on it or even could be seen from the site. Hell, even if this was going to be a super obvious Islamic holy site, with large minarets and crescents, etc, I might see your argument. However, this is going to look like a YMCA. Several blocks from the site. Half a block from a strip club. Down the street from McDonalds and Burger King.

For Christ`s sake, this is just an opportunity for people to hate Muslims. These people didn`t attack us. These people aren`t building a Mosque on public property. They`re building an Islamic Community Center on private property, too far from Ground Zero to be seen at Ground Zero. The whole issue is bull!@#%.
