| Damn man this suspense is killing me! I distinctly remember when Blizz was announcing Ghost with that image that got progressively more clear over time, and how swept up I got in the hype. Now it's happening all over again.
If SC2 is announced I think I'll blow an artery!
EDIT: As the graphical time line goes from left to right it follows a natural pattern of up-down-up-down. The next entry should fall on the bottom along with the rest of the RTS games. Yes, I know I'm reading too much into this....
I like the Flash intro you've got on the Korean website.

| Remember when the hyped and pumped Ghost got canceled?
- It's most certainly a mmo/subscription based game.
- Announced in sKorea makes it extremely likely to be Starcraft but not exactly Starcraft 2.. enter MMORTS.
- It's a new franchise before it's D3 (see WoW.exe)
- It probably won't be in public beta before late 2009.

| I still feel like Diablo 2 is one of the best games of all time (along with Max Payne 2 and Painkiller). I install it about once a year. Even with the dated graphics, the gameplay is simply amazing. All the clones since have failed to grasp even a fraction of what D2 brought to the table. |

| jdLordHelmet, I can certainly agree with you on that. D2 with its diverse character development, variety of equipment, and random map creation leads to an immensely replayable game that's nothing short of spectacular. But I've always held SC very near and dear to my heart because of the sheer reflexes and on-the-fly strategy necessary to excel at. We're long overdue for a sequel to the SC franchise, and I'm convinced it's at least along those lines given the location of the announcement and all the hints Blizz has been dropping recently.
Now the only question remains: will it follow in its predecessors footsteps and be an RTS, or something new like a SC MMO? Frankly another MMO that competes with the already successful WoW seems a bit risky, and the company is likely to receive a backlash of complaints against anything that strays from its roots.
The simple fact is obvious - people want a SC2. I can't think of any other game that's nearly a decade since release and is still played as much as SC. It's achieved cult status in Korea, and countless gamers speak about it as passionately as I am right now. A search for "StarCraft 2" conducted on Google yields over 10 pages of hype surrounding the possible sequel. They're practically sitting on a goldmine with this game. I can't even imagine how much money it'll make on release date...all I know is I want to participate in it.

| If it's SC2 I hope they avoid the Hero concept and items. Leave that stuff for single player and story content :)
SC was so well balanced I wouldn't mind keeping it at 3 races as well, despite the coolness of a protoss/zerg hybrid. I find it unlikely that Blizzard wouldn't include a new race though. Makes you wonder if they could live up to the quality of the first SC. That's a lot of pressure.
There are the 'mobile' job postings but I think those are for a different project that wouldn't warrent so much hype. It would be cool to see development for the DS/PSP. Cellphone type games are cheap and easy to make and can be profitable, but again why the hype for that.
And another MMO? I guess but why take away from WoW. If it is a MMO, I sure hope it's not another RPG. |

| I give credit to Blizz for trying something new with WC3, but hero's and micromanagement take away from the same feel as SC. That game is all about macro management and quick adaptations. Also the terrain comes very much into play when staging an assault.
It's been said that SC2 might possibly be in 3d. I wonder how taxing that'll be on a computer when massive battles take place? Blizzard games have always had less strict requirements to run their games. Personally I hope they keep it 2d with some graphic enhancement, although the ability to zoom in/out to better manage tight battles might be a nice feature.
I also hope they don't consider using immunities and auto-spells like they did in WC3 (excluding medic heal). Units that were immune to specific attacks were so frustrating and forced an adjustment in build.
Things I would like to see include battle formations, queued research, a select all option (ctrl-a), and the ability to select more units at a time. WC3 also had a good approach to chunking similar unit types in the unit management screen. |

Each of those has been in Command & Conquer since the first game, I believe. I don't know whether I like them all or not. Sure, it makes life easier, but that means it also takes away from some of the skill of the game. It comes down to what aspect of gameplay you want to compare players on (tactics or micro skills). |

I agree here. I think heroes worked for the *WarCraft* setting, as you can even look back at WarCraft II and the unit limit was not extremely high back then. It forced the game into more of a strategic "using every unit to its fullest" model. Which worked for that game.
But you look at StarCraft, the game that coined the term "Zerg" (or Zerglish Rush). StarCraft has always been about massive battles with tons of units. I think it needs to stay that way. Now maybe they could incorportate a *similar* concept to heroes (i.e. "Generals" or something) but if they do, I don`t think they should be as fundamental as WarCraft 3 heroes were. |

| It better damned be an RPG. If it ain't, I won't even bother? Another MMORPG? Please. There's a reason why I've never played UO, EQ, WoW and any other MMORPG and I never will touch any of those games: they just leech you for your time and money, and I'm really talking about the MONEY here, cause all games leech your time, but only MMORPG's (and to a lesser extent, XBox Live) leech you for money every month (or year) along with buying the original software.. what's the point.. it's just a cash grab.
I just want to play a nice clean futuristic RTS where I can surround some bitch with my army and frag them all to death.
Now the real question is this:
Will Battle.Net become a for pay service in the future? It never has for WC or SC so I don't expect it to now, but with all these for-pay gaming services ya know never know. |

| The Diablo in ligyron's post is the background on the day 2 image, not anything to do with starcraft. Like I said, the backgrounds are completely irrelevant and simply go with that day's game. This has been extensively hashed out and proven all over the place if you look around. |

| Here`s my take on it. It`s a little lengthy so bear with me. The next release will likely be from the SC universe...it`s what the fan-base at large wants (particularly in Asia where I understand WoW isn`t as popular as in North America/Europe).
Regardless of what game is released, I doubt it will be an MMORPG for two main reasons:
1) It would be competing directly with WoW. With the recent release of BC, it doesn`t make sense to fracture your fan base. Most people simply can`t afford more than one monthly MMORPG subscription.
2) Logistics. Yes, WoW is a cash cow and yes it is by far the most successful MMORPG out today and the foreseeable future. That said, just think about how many resources would be required to maintain a second pay-for-play service? If you plan on releasing new content every month or so, this means you have to have dedicated personal (ie. artists, coders, QA, etc.) working on it. Would Blizzard divide its present staff in two or will there be a mass hiring to accommodate another grand venture? Some how I can`t see either scenario playing out.
From a business standpoint the best bet would be to deliver a non-MMORPG game (preferably SC2). It won`t make as much money, but it`s a sure bet that will require less time/money to develop and get out the door. WoW still has a few years of life left in it - why mess with a good thing?
And besides, the fact that Bliz is finally making news about a potential new game...we all know that it means they`ve already had something on the burner for the last 18-24 months. Now it`s just a waiting game of when it will be released :) |

| It's already been determined what the subtle background images are. The ones for Diablo are him with his claws extended. The WC one is of a footman and grunt dueling in a field. And the SC image is the wallpaper with Zerg swarming over char.
I believe the graphics are getting updated daily at 3am EST. Now the only question is will they reveal Saturday's graphic at the same time or will they keep us in limbo throughout the day and do a progressive reveal like they did with Ghost, or just drop it in suddenty to correspond with the announcement at WWI.

| Very exciting news. The new animation for the Ghost nuclear attack is a bit disconcerting though. One of the best part about the nuke was the "Nuclear Launch Detected" sound and frantic search for the little red dot.
Hopefully that was just a placeholder graphic to show off the art for the game. Since the game is still in alpha a lot of things can change (hopefully). Like the Marine shields. I don`t know what the art department was thinking with that one. Leave the shields to WarCraft titles, in my opinion. |

| This sucks.
Starcraft was a just about perfect. Wonderfully balanced, pretty much perfect in every way. No improvements needed.
Diablo 2 was a game with HUGE potential that was just never done right. There have been glaring balance issues since day one, not to mention the fact that realm play is pretty much pointless due to dupes and hacks. The only reason I install D2 anymore is for ladder resets (don`t hold your breath for these!)- my old school D2 friends and I enjoy the challenge of racing through the quests untwinked and dominating the ladder for the first 24 hours (we play Hardcore, if anyone cares). After the first day or two, everyone`s back to Baal runs for easy xp and items, but until then, the game is a ton of fun. I`d do anything for monthly ladder resets. I could go on and on forever with all the mistakes that Blizzard made with D2, but suffice it to say that I try to have some sort of faith in Blizzard that they`ll make D2 and solve all the problems that they had with D2. |

| So I guess I`m basically setting myself up for lynching by a mob of angry fanboys, but here goes...
From what info has been released about the game so far, it looks like Starcraft 1 with juiced-up graphics (oh, and the graphics SUCK for being ANNOUNCED in 2007, with a probably release of 2009+...I really hope that these are just VERY early alpha build graphics)
I may be full of shit, but I think Blizzard should have stopped with the whole sequel thing and announced a totally original game in a new universe. Starcraft is Blizzard`s most beloved game of all time, and is practically a religion in Korea. If you look at the progression of the Warcraft and Diablo games, there`s enormous and fundamental differences in the gameplay mechanics between sequels. IMO, there`s FAR too much pressure on Blizzard with SC2 - especially considering that practically the whole development team responsible for the original Starcraft left back in 2000/2003! It looks to me like they`re appeasing the Korean marketplace and hardcore US fanboys by re-releasing the original starcraft in 3-D with some new units.
The bar has been raised so high by Company of Heroes, Supreme Commander, and C&C 3 that 1998 gameplay combined with 2005 visuals simply won`t cut it - especially with a 2007 ANNOUNCEMENT and a likely release date of 2009+ |

| It just has to make me laugh, all this speculation about SCII from everyone. It seems to me that the gameplay videos so far are just a tech-demo of the new game engine, using the old SC units and buildings as a template. People are getting all worked up about how it looks like it is just a rehash of SC in a new cereal box...but I think applying Occam's razor to this really puts it into perspective. Consider:
-The game was just officially announced
-There is gameplay footage
-We know an engine has been under-development for a while
-Few details about the game are known
So I submit that few details about the game are known because the company itself is still hashing them out. So to create the gameplay footage, they simply "ported" the old SC onto the new engine to both test the engine out and to give people a rough idea of what to expect, graphics-wise.
So before you say this is just going to be a modernized version of the same old gameplay based on a few minutes of what is probably engine-test video, remember that the original SC was going to simply be 'orcs in space', and we all know how THAT turned out! |

| what are you talking about Jubedgy. They didn`t simply port over the old SC into the new engine.
Have you actually watched the gameplay video?! |

| Jubedgy, it`s certainly not Blizzard`s style to just port old starcraft with a few new graphics for the sake of releasing some screenshots. Granted we did have orcs in space at one point, but they were honestly planning on going with that for a little while. I would imagine that at this point of time, we are seeing something very representative of what the game will probably end up being or Blizzard would have waited further to make the announcement. |

| OFFICIAL WEB SITE - BEST WEB SITE EVER! =D
Really cool site, no doubt. Nice technology behind it too...Flash, XML-XSLT, Ajax driven, lightbox image displays. Blizz web developers are just as creative as the game designers.
The gameplay footage looks so exciting! Man I can't wait to play this game. Love the upgrade to the Protoss gateway allowing you to warp in units anywhere under the influence of a pylon matrix or phasm prism. And the blink ability of the Stalkers. I'm already starting to think of potential strategies for this.
Edit: I remain hopeful about an included fourth race. Evidence here.

| I find it funny when I logged on to Supreme Commander`s multiplayer network there was almost 900 people on. Then I logged on StarCraft on battle.net and 10s of thousands of people were on. It`s safe to say SupCom is going to get pwned. |
