| It`s extremely whack that blizz won`t allow pre-downloads to activate until 10AM PDT on release day. Then again I don`t think I`m going to stay awake for a midnight release. |

| I'm doing the digital download Tuesday after work. I considered doing midnight release, but I wouldn't really have time to play before work.. I'm really happy Blizzard went with a digital download option!
Nebu (or anyone else)- beta was a big hodgepodge server, but is release going to US East/US West? I will definitely post my name + id, and would be happy to play with anyone! |

League of Legends is just too addicting. The twitchiness of SC2 is a bit off-putting for me, I'm getting old.

Gonna blast through the missions, trying to do everything as hard as Possible, failing and trying easier modes, and then jump right into multi-player. |

I'll probably have single player beat sometime tomorrow or Weds. then after that it is nonstop Multiplayer!

| Success! Just got home after standing 6h in line for a collector's edition copy. Installing now...good times.
So many funny moments. For example, a guy orders a pizza and the driver pulls up to the front of the store. The car is maybe 15 feet or so from the guy in line. Driver doesn't want to get of the car. Kid doesn't want to leave the line (and risk losing his spot). Everyone is watching this exchange and busting a gut. Finally after some back and forth they agree to meet halfway. Priceless, too bad I didn't have a video camera.
The group of people in front of me (including a decent looking Asian chick) camped out for 30h to make sure they were first in line when the doors opened. If that wasn't crazy enough, they told me they weren't even getting a collector's edition, just a regular copy. When someone asked them why wait in line instead of downloading the game they said "We're here for the swag".
P.S. I'm using the same in-game nick as this website (Bivrip).

| So if you go back and replay a mission in the archives, do you keep your current upgrades or do you only use the upgrades you had when you first chose that mission?
On the "escort the people in the transport" level, I only got the 1 zerg research out of 3 available, probably because I took the advice of building bunkers at the 3 spots where zerg come from off the road. It wasn`t until after I slept on it that I realized it would be SOOOO much easier to just make an infantry ball and go explore between transports for the other 2 research points. |

I gotta say, I love the game, but the single player storyline was kind of a let down. I waited 12 years for this, and I feel like the got a comic book`s worth of story material.
Nebu.. I know you don`t have a lot of influence.. but please tell them to emphasize the story more in the expansions. Wings of Liberty barely had as much story as maybe a single campaign in SC, and the ending was less climactic. Honestly, aside from the ending cinematic of Zerg vanilla, this was the least climactic ending cinematic in the whole series. |

I beat everything but the last mission on Brutal which is truly deserving of the name(I think it was a mistake to take out the air and leave the worms but we'll see). I only play protoss too so it's hard for me to play Terran well....plus I just KNOW is screwing up my protoss game.
I've also done every single player and campaign achievement except the last Brutal and the 8 hour normal mode which I have 3 more missions on and am well under the limit on. I'm going to finish the achievements up tomorrow and then it's time to start cranking some multiplayer.

| Assuming that achievement isn't broken, that's a pretty dick move on the part of Blizzard. Replays shouldn't count against you. You should be able to replay however many times you want with your best time going towards the achievement. I sincerely hope they fix that. |

| Well I have all the achievements but that one now.
Sad thing is you don't need to do all the missions, just beat the game. Some people have gotten it from doing 18 missions ) =
That's the route I'm going to take now. Reckon I can do it in under 5 that way.
BTW if anyone has any questions on the achievements let me know. I figured out quite a few tricks over the past week.

I'm low plat/high gold player, I love playing 2v2 and 3v3 for fun. Zerg player. If you add me and want to play, don't be shy! I'm always willing to play with people on my level/better than me, and I'm willing to play a few games with bronze/silver players and help as much as I can if you are interested in improving. I can help you if you are terran/protoss too, I just don't like playing them as much :)
Just finished the campaign yesterday on hard, missed a bunch of achievements... last mission was tough! Took me like 5 hours to beat. Definitely looking forward to the story continuation with Heart of the Swarm.
My best tip for campaign: Make sure you get SCV upgrades in the armory, and I personally really liked getting the merc contracts. They spawn instantly once the CD is up (5 mins to start) so they are good for putting together a quick army, or reinforcing when the crap hits the fan.
And Charkoth: I took out the Nydus Worms pre-last machine and regretted not taking out the air instead. YMMV? :P Maybe it's grass is greener or something. |

| Well I ended up going back to my Original campaign and dealing with the Nydus worms. I guess my attachment to mass battlecruisers doesn't work on this level. Banshees for the nydus worms and static seige tank + bunker defense did it although it was as close as possible.
The Relic had 3 hitpoints when it hit 100% at which point it became invincible.
One thing odd that I noticed on my normal playthrough with no nydus was at 98% or so Kerrigan with her old human portrait appear and said something like "you can do it or hang on Jim". It didn't happen in my brutal with nydus worm victory. Odd.
I've read online that if you go mass mind control devices on the air map it's easy since you can just mindcontrol mutas + broodlords which rape kerrigan. I didn't want to cheese my win so I just adjusted my strategy and stuck to it. Once I decided mass Banshees + let no nydus survive it only took me about 4 trys and no save reloads. |

| WTF this game is too fuckin' fast for me.
I played the campaign and loved it, then tried to play a coop game and was SORELY DISAPPOINTED when I found that it is played at like 200% speed with no option that I can find to choose "normal" speed. I knew I wouldn't want to play ranked matches because they're all super goddamn fast, but even the coop? Geez.
Why call it "normal" speed when "ludicrous speed" is the only real option?
How stupid. It's devolved into like 10% strategy and 90% muscle memory and reflexes. When I want to play twitch games I own dudes in Call of Duty. I had hoped an RTS would have a bit more strategy. |

| BivRip, I used it a little in the campaign for looking at maps on like two missions, the Strategies there are not that good for Brutal missions, but the multiplayer info looks pretty good.
For $20 if you're not tight on cash it's worth it I think so you can look at the guide instead of searching the internet.
Although I haven't played them yet I guess there is a set of challenges to "teach" you to transition between campaign and multiplayer.
Hjparcins the game really isn't that fast in multiplayer. Just play the campaign on Hard mode which is the same speed I think(I know Brutal is). Playing on Normal is slower and pretty damn boring IMO (which is why I'm pissed off that I have to burn through all these missions yet AGAIN).
I'm fairly fast but I'm not like amazing or anything, really the speed is in thinking more than acting fast. It's a good mental workout really. |

Psionic Assault, Opening Gambit, and Rush Defense are included in the zip. I think Psionic Assault and Opening Gambit are the toughest to get on gold out of all the challenges. Maybe they will help someone out. |

| Took me a hair under 5 hours to do the 8 hour achievement this time. Much more bearable now that I've worked out all the tricks and only had to do 18 missions.
Key Techs to research are the Reactor, Psi Emmiter, Auto Vespene Gas, BioSteel.
Unit techs that are great are medic techs, all the base techs except the multiple SCV build speed, the seige tank techs(must have), viking techs if you plan on destroying ground on last missions, banshee techs if you plan on destroying air. (I advise destroying air and killing nydus with cloaked banshees)
Key Mercs are the Seige Tanks, Vikings, + Battle cruiser.
The banshees are great for the last mission.
Time to start cranking some multiplayer....although I do want to check out these "Challenges".

| Yeah I did them all last night. The only one that I didn't one-shot Gold on were the caster ones, the Terran and Zerg onces took me twice, and the Protoss one probably took me 15 times sadly considering it is my race.
The Protoss caster one is pretty fun, and challenging and it definately improved by caster knowledge and abilities.
The reason it took me so long is I didn't think to Feedback the banshees until one of my last tries and then it was much easier to beat. |

| Brutal isn`t so bad if you can beat hard. The final mission does require planning, but I found that armored bunkers with armory upgrades for capacity and range make pretty decent walls for the 4 chokes. The mind control tower is insanely good in the final missions, because you can grab ultralisks and give them a pocket medic. For the last mission I had ultra`s in front of my bunkers on Hold with a medic on hold behind the bunkers healing them which seemed to help a ton. For the few missions leading up to it, running with ultralisks in your army is beast, they are awesome tanks and you can easily pull them off the front line to get healed up. It may be an AI issue or something the zerg units seemed to favor targeting my regular terran army and letting the ultra`s chomp down their forces unless I had one way out in front. |

| On the last mission on hard I created another starport and factory and put like 3 bunkers at each choke + 5 or so tanks + scvs + zerg slow down building; lots of turrets on mineral lines and on the artifact cliff and then began my unstoppable fleet composed of battlecruisers + vikings + science vessels that would be roaming around helping out areas that needed more attention, killing kerrigan fast or even that flying monstrosity.
Just don`t forget to get lots and lots of scvs, because this map has a lot of minerals.
The science vessel was by far the most important unit on the game. Immortal fleets with them. |

| I haven`t gotten any friend adds yet. I don`t know if there`s just something I don`t understand...?
As for the last mission, I actually used the things that slow zerg movement and attack speed in an area. I found that if you have two of those at both focal points, 2-3 bunkers filled with marines or marine mercs, and a bunch of tanks, you can handle the Nydus Worm version of the last level. I also recommend using Banshees to go out and eliminate the Nydus worms. I was using BC`s, but I think Banshees make a lot more sense.
Honestly, I did this, and it wasn`t *that* bad. The only times things got crazy were when Kerrigan attacked and like 3 nydus worms pop up at the same time towards the end. Then you really got to multitask to not lose momentum... |

Well, you only receive friend invites when it`s a real id add (i.e. they added your email). When you add via name#code, the other people don`t know you have them on your list. You got to send a msg to them and ask to add...
I think it`s that way so you can whisper someone ingame or check his profile without him having to add you on his list. Adding someone to your friend list is the only way to do both things at the moment. |

| I made the top league during the beta, but I just haven`t bothered with serious multiplayer competition since I bought the game. Since SC and WC3, custom games have always been my bread and butter. So far, I`ve been enjoying the DotA-like Storm of the Imperial such-and-so. It`s still early in development, but it`s surprisingly full-featured already. I`m sad that the Diplomacy and -good- Risk map from beta have yet to show up post-release, but I`m guessing we`ll see something good on that front sooner or later.
I`ll probably get back into melee multi eventually, but Victoria 2 (Paradox rules!) is coming out on Friday and I have a lot of work to do as well. For the next week or two, at the least, I doubt I`ll be playing more than an occasional melee match. |

I built a ton of those Hive Mind things around the artifact and near my minerals and just MC`d every mutalisk and broodlord I could. By the end I had about 18 Battle Cruisers, 30 Mutas and 20 Brood lords. They all had to stay clustered around the artifact as the rest of my base ended up getting destroyed in the last 10%. |

I know they have smart casting now, but it would`ve been helpful if I could just have all my battle cruisers fire the yamato cannon at once at Kerrigan rather than having to hotkey+click each time. I looked online and in the hotkeys in game and no luck. |

| 8v8 protoss and not a single colossus the whole game? Or Psi storm? Man. You guys wiped out pink first and he was probably one of their better players.
Hilarious that the 2v4 guys talked so much smack, even asking computer to leave right at the beginning.
But they did make a good point. If a player leaves, his probes continue to harvest, splitting it between each of the remaining players. I HIGHLY suggest that in future games, if you wanna ramp your producting fast, take the leavers money and reinvest it back into more workers and static defense. In your case green's income was split between the remaining players (orange already being dead). It would probably have been good to make 5 more probes with that and then maybe a few cannons. so you don't have to micro much against reapers or other crap harass. |

Mass Phoenix is a good strat if they know how to use it.. Gravaton beam workers and they die in 2 hits from other phoenix, most other ground forces die just as fast.. A click then mass spam the grav beam starting with important units and working your way down.. Great for taking out all their workers if they dont have AA around the minerals, and great as part of an attack force with your other teammates. |

I`ve been trying to learn random lately, and protoss is my weakest race. I played Zerg during beta and Terran right after release. If anything, I cannot wait for the custom hotkeys as they are going to be a godsend to random players.

| I don`t know what`s wrong with me, but it really bothers me that not only am I not into Starcraft 2 I have to admit that I don`t really like it.
Starcraft was my life when I was a kid. Serious. I played it all day and night in my teenage years. I took second place at one of the first tournaments held for the game in San Francisco where I got to meet Bill Roper. My senior year in high school, my yearbook labeled me as the "Starcraft Kid".
If feels dull and uninspired. After buying it, I got to platinum in all the brackets without really trying and then just stopped playing. A couple patches ago when they made it mandatory for you to build a supply depot before a barracks was the final nail in the coffin for me. Seriously, they couldn`t think of any other way to balance the game then to force everyone to use the same build order? Boring. Went back to WoW and Team Fortress 2 shortly after. |

Sorry to see you lose interest reaver. I really feel like B.net 2.0 crippled the game. It could have been so much better, and yet it stalled the game by a year. It almost makes me wonder if blizzard used b.net 2.0 and the stall time purposely to minimizet he impact SC2 had on WoW. (released right before an expansion, and far less control over UMS maps and hosting). |

| Honestly, I love Starcraft 2. I think it's easily the best traditional RTS ever made. The interface is silky smooth, the single-player is fun, the standard multiplayer is spot on, and the UMS multiplayer is as good as ever. It's also a blast to watch really good players go at it.
The only downside to it, for me, is that the single player story was an absolute joke. Terrible, terrible stuff. Only about 1/3rds of the missions even had a minor connection to the overall arc. Compare this with SC1, where pretty much every mission played some central role (especially ignoring the Zerg campaigns, which were sorta story light anyway). |

I can make some if you want. They won`t have all the luxurious voice acting, but they will be fun.
There does seem to be a huge void of single player fun in the custom maps. Everyone is too busy trying to make the next DOTA. If there is some interest, I`ll consider making them. |

| This new release is sort of bittersweet. For a long time I've not been happy with the way Blizzard games have been going. Battle.net after three years still feels like it has half the features of the old one. Micro-transactions and monetization are everywhere. And I keep feeling that I have less and less of a control over something I bought. And games just don't seem as fun as before, especially Diablo III endgame.
And whenever concerns are brought to Blizzard the response is a rather shocking 'F. that Loser'.
This is not a rant, but rather just disappointment at the direction Blizzard has been heading when it turned into a corporation. This is the first in 2 decades that I am not buying a blizzard game on launch even though I was planning on getting 4 copies for myself and family. Maybe I'll get it later if the outlook improves. |

I think SCII blew away the previous SC. Diablo III is the only black mark on an otherwise perfect record at Blizzard. |

| Beat every mission with all achievements on Brutal now. Best campaign and Cinematics Blizzard has released to date but I feel it is on the easy side for the hardest difficulty setting. I don't even build a base on so many missions, pretty much just Kerrigan and Hydralisks. No mission is even remotely as difficult as "All In" from WOL and I rarely had to play a mission more than once except to get a few achievements I missed. Time to start on the multiplayer.

| Also beat all the missions on Brutal with all achievements. I think once you beat WoL on brutal, you know what to expect and HOTS isn`t as tough. In WoL, I mostly played marine/medic and attack moved the entire time. All In seemed tougher because it was a defensive mission. Last mission for Zerg campaign isn`t going to be defensive, obviously.
For those who want to know, here are the optimal mutations/skills. OR depends on the mission.
Zergling- Metabolic boost / Raptor (crazy good)
Baneling- Corrosive OR Rupture / Hunter
Roach - Hydriodic Bile / Corpser (This is so ridiculously overpowered)
Hydralisk - Doesn`t matter, I chose extra life / Lurker
Mutalisk - Depends on mission / depends on mission
Swarm Host - Pressured Glands / Carrion
Ultralisk - Monarch Blades / Torreseque
For Kerrigan`s abilities, this is what I found...
Tier 1: Heroic Fortitude (strangely enough)
Tier 2: Chain Reaction
Tier 3: Zergling Reconstitution (for early missions with lots of zergling use) then I go for Improved Overlords
Tier 4: Spawn Banelings (surprisingly MUCH better than either the excellent Mend or Wild Mutation. Can wipe out bases without losing a unit.)
Tier 5: Twin Drones (other abilities suck)
Tier 6: Fury OR Ability Efficiency
Tier 7: Drop-pods (instant mass army useful for attacking enemy bases)
Now I need to retrain myself for multiplayer... |

| I never built a roach or a mutalisk outside the missions you acquire them. Nothing but Hydralisks(with + 1 range), Queens(for creep + heals) and ultralisks(with torrasque and the burrowed charge which is OP), the entire Tier 3 of units was just useless in the campaign.
Most of the way through the Mastery achievements now, also ridiculously easy, if anyone has a question on one let me know.
Odd I have a completely different Kerrigan build and thoughts on them.
Tier 1 Kinetic Blast 300 damage ability is just too good to pass up. It's instagib all those annoying Seige tanks behind lines, and makes fighting collossi, carriers and tough units a piece of cake. Health is irrelevant since Kerrigan can't die with mend unless you try soloing in deep.
Tier 2 Psionic Shift is a must have IMO! 30% movement speed is so sick in most fights you need to run back and forth. I think chain reaction wasn't nearly as good as psionic shift since it basically only boils down to 40 extra damage a hit when there is 4 more targets. With psionic shift you can charge through enemy lines, escape maurauders and when on creep you can cross the map disgustingly fast.
Tier 3 Improved Overlords a no brainer.
Tier 4 I liked Spawn Banelings but Mend is just SICK! You can use it to keep your hydralisks and zerglings topped off and keep kerrigan fighting armies solo.
Tier 5, Twin drones useless since I almost never needed resources outside the first couple minutes and Malignant creep is just sick when you cover the map in creep and it is much easier to do that with this. Your Towers and units all get 30% increased attack speed which is huge if you have a ranged hydralisk army with Kerrigan tanking.
Tier 6 I went Fury but ability efficiency is better as when I calculated it after I beat the game you can do far more damage with Ability efficiency + Kinetic Blast/psionic shift/mend than with her white damage attacks.
Tier 7 Drop pods best IMO, don't need to micro anything and it isn't situational like apocalypse. That ability with Kerrigan mend made any tough fights easy and you could always take your leftover with you to help clear other areas.
I really think they need to come out with a "legendary" difficulty for this game now, I find the lack of challenge (or perhaps the OP Kerrigan abilities) making the campaign much less enjoyable than it should be. |

| I was a fan of Kinetic Blast until I realized that Spawn Broodlings performed the same job so much better. With Heroic Fortitude, I didn`t need mend. (Although Wild Mutate, the third choice, is also extremely good. It`s neat to throw it on a stack of mutas and just raze through armies.)
I thought Hydralisks were terrible (when I had to use them, I switched from increased range to increased health which worked better. Then again, I had stopped using `mend` by that time). The zerglings with metabolic boost/raptor with Kerrigan`s `zerging rez` passive ability makes early missions so easy. And the corpser roach was so overpowered I could just make only that and attack-move in Phantoms of the Void.
I found while abilities like Kinectic Blast or Psionic Shift were good, I was too distracted to use them consistently all the time. I felt like those passive abilities, while may not be as good, were used 100% of the time where often I would not use those other abilities as well as I could.
It sounds like you had a more complicated Kerrigan with a simpler army while I had a simpler Kerrigan and more complicated army (I used nearly every unit except swarm hosts). Interesting how we went through brutal in different ways.
While I think the campaign is good, there is something that feels off. I finally realized it. The missions are more gimmicky than RTS. One mission felt like Diablo where the boss was like a reincarnation of Belial. While The Frozen Throne had a `tower defense` mission, it was a secret mission. But now it seems like those type of missions are forced on you, and I don`t like it. I want RTS in my Starcraft 2 campaign, not Diablo, not Starship-RPG, and some of the other high gimmick missions. If the campaign felt easy, I think it is because it wasn`t using those RTS muscles as we expected. In many ways, it felt more like a Warcraft 3 campaign.
It would be nice for there to be a macro mission. On higher difficulties, the more you had to macro. (Casual would have you with one base, Normal with two, Hard on three, Brutal on four, etc.) I don`t mind single player being different from multiplayer, but I do want single player to remain RTS. |

| Yeah I played around with Wild Mutate when I did all my "Kerrigan" achievements, I admit the bonus damage was nice but the still found Mend to be more useful, 75 health on a 8 second cooldown with a wide radius around you just crazy late game when you clearing bases in a mass of hydras and ultras.
It is hard to say really what is better without the missions being more difficult. If there were an "All in" or "In utter darkness" equivalent I may find different abilities more useful.
I don't mind the differences in the classic RTS and Starcraft (although the Hyperion mission seemed a bit off if still fun). If I wanted to play classic RTS I'd go play command and conquer or something equivalent. I definitely had more in this campaign than any RTS to date, maybe we just burned through it too fast.
I have yet to find one of these "mastery" achievements challenging. They should require them on Brutal or something instead of hard. The most difficult thing about these achievements is trying to get the unclear ones that don't explain what you need to do clearly.
I think that damn F2 key untrained years of RTS hotkey grouping, I'm going to get my ass handed to me when I start playing multiplayer until I relearn it.

| I also wanted to say I was disappointed that Blizzard put "Bobby Kotick" on the "Very Special Thanks" credits. Screw that guy. |

| Anyone else think the story was much improved from WoL? I still think it was a mistake to.. umm.. change Kerrigan, as BW-era Kerrigan is still my favorite character from a Blizzard game. Honestly, that -whole- game was her story. Blizzard doesn't really have teeth like that anymore.
However, I remember alternating between eye-rolling boredom and face-slamming rage during WoL's story, while HotS damn near worked most of the time. I especially liked the Primal Zerg stuff (even if it was a retcon), and I thought the ending was a bit touching.
I also really enjoyed the campaign. I only wish I had more to play. Oh well.. two more years.... |

| RTS genre is the only game genre where you get to experience the good guy perspective as well as the bad guy perspective. RTS single player was fun because of the different perspectives (like playing as evil Stalin to spread Communism around the world in Red Alert).
Wings of Liberty only had one race for single player (Terran) which really felt like much of the traditional single player RTS experience was missing.
Wings of Liberty story focused more on the interplay of characters instead of factions. HOTS feels better because there isn`t any interplay of characters (very, very few exchanges since Raynor is MIA for most of the campaign and the other characters are your subservient slaves).
It also feels good to play Zerg. Perhaps people will really like Void since then the three races will finally be present, and it will finally feel like a RTS single player experience.
I just hope in Void there is more interplay between factions and not characters. Wings of Liberty might as well been a soap opera.
In Warcraft 4, I DO NOT WANT race specific expansion packs. Please no! Not Warcraft 4 vanilla being Human then the Undead Expansion Pack then the Orc Expansion Pack and then the Night Elf Expansion Pack. Give us all four perspectives per single player experience. Viva la difference is the RTS single player experience. No other game genre has it. |

| Well to be honest there isn't much interesting they could do with the Human story if you think about it. I think the whole Raynor conflict in WoL set up HoTS pretty nicely. WoL did have throwaway characters like Tichus and Tosh that you never learn to care for.
Abathur was my favorite character in HoTS though, even if he did remind me of the collector boss in Mass Effect 3. |

| Things that bug me about both games:
1. Mengsk as the main villain - since when? At the end of Brood War, Kerrigan more or less treated him as a non-threat. Meanwhile, Raynor saved his life and didn't seem particularly keen to go after him anymore. Of course, they still hated him. I just didn't think people really gave a shit about him or his little Dominion after Brood War. All of a sudden, WoL was all about liberating the Dominion or something stupid like that. I thought the whole point of Vanilla Terran was that taking down one dictator in Koprulu just leads to another...? God, Blizzard's work used to be so more cynical.. and interesting.
2. I get that they're setting up for another big baddy, but they really did it in the lamest way possible. In WoW, I can understand the great big evil threat of the week. In SC, I'd hope for something a bit more grounded. But whatever.
3. Kerrigan in Brood War was -awesome-. By the end of HotS, she's cool again, but she's still not her BW self. Raynor also seems like a bit of a lovesick puppy.
Still, all that said, HotS was much improved from WoL. Hopefully, by the end of the third, they will be figuring out how to write interesting narratives again.
The campaigns themselves are excellent. I wish they had a few more truly classic missions, but, otherwise, tip-top. They represent the best of the post-BW SP RTS campaigns. |

| I don't know I think the entire story of Starcraft is pretty weak and uses a ton of cliches if you look at it. You seem to be expecting some amazing story, but short of creating new conflicts out of thin air like they are doing, Starcraft was resolved in Brood War.
Once Aemon is dead they will have Earth returning in force etc. There is only so much you can do that is new and interesting. I think Kerrigan herself and her developments are the only thing unique to Starcraft really. |

| There's a difference between an "amazing" story and one that's interesting. WoL was neither. Brood War was at least the latter. Blizzard's stories used to have teeth. They used to pack a punch. Think about Terran Vanilla, Terran BW, or the end of Brood War. It was never as simple as, "Good guys beat bad guys." Not even close. I still watch those ending FMVs just because of how entertaining they are.
The closest to the straight forward good/bad archetype was Protoss Vanilla, but, still, you're left with the fact that Tassadar is dead, that Aiur is beyond redemption, and nothing is really solved. In Protoss BW, you're allied to Kerrigan, killing your own, and basically aware that everything you do just draws you more intensely into Kerrigan's orbit. The revelation about Razagal was the final cherry on it.
WoL, by comparison, would make Top Gun blush with its absolutely edgeless, vapid inanity. God, they were so convinced that they created this huge epic moment by the end, and I just rolled my eyes at the whole thing. All they did was run around acting like Mengsk was a big bad for a while, realize that a MacGuffin can "save" Kerrigan, then "save" her. The same character that, btw, was -clearly- irredeemable at the end of Brood War. In fact, I'd say the whole -point- of Brood War was the revelation that she was irredeemable.
HotS was definitely an improvement, but I still think it accomplished less than Brood War by some margin.
Obviously, none of it is high art. I read a lot of fiction, and nothing in gaming comes close. Still, there's variance within gaming, and Brood War and WoL manage to find themselves on quite opposite ends of the spectrum. |
