| Google Goggles - cool program that lets you take pics of things like landmarks and then it will pop up with a bunch of information about what you took a picture of
gtasks - great if you use google tasks. Can set a widget on your desktop showing your list of tasks
wikimobile - nice little interface to wikipedia
Movies (by flixster) - good for getting show times, dvd rental info, and trailers
Handcent SMS - I like this over the built in SMS program
Google voice - I don't use it for incoming/outgoing calls, but have my voicemail redirected to google instead. When you get a voicemail, you get an e-mail with a transcription of the voicemail and can then either listen to it from a computer and browser, or through the google voice app
Torrent-fu - great program for interfacing to uTorrent. I can't remember if you have to root your phone for this one to work or not.
LauncherPro (or ADW Launcher) - great home screen replacements that allow you to have more than 3 desktops. Not sure what the droid x home screen is like, but the default google one is lacking

That's a start. There was a fantastic guide which listed all the must haves for Android (may have been on techcrunch) but I can't find it now... they had apps that would like you uninstall the crappy default programs, better keyboard, better text messaging, apps that let you use your phone as a remote control... if I find it, I will post!
I use: Yahoo Mail, Shop Shavvy (for scanning QR codes), Mobile Authenticator, and Pandora. |

| Here`s a list I use frequently (omitting onces mentioned):
Yelp - Find food places/reviews
TV.com - You can stream some TV shows from phone
Flixster - Find movie times and theaters
Advance Task killer - kills apps, save batteries
Meebo - chat (AIM, gtalk) app
Mobile Defense - Locks your phone in case it gets lost /stolen (not sure how great this one is)
Opera Mini - Multiple tabs work better than default when surfing online

| One that I found after constant searching is RingRiser. It slowly increases the volume of your incoming calls from mute/vib-only to max volume. At work, I`m in loud places one minute (I supervise a loud machine shop) and in meetings the next, so I constantly forget to change volumes. This lets me kill an incoming call before it disrupts the whole meeting but doesn`t let me miss it if I`m in the shop. My old dumb-phone had this feature built-in, but I couldn`t find it anywhere in the default Nexus One Froyo OS. |

| I have google sky map because my ex downloaded it, but I`ve never used it. If you are having problems accidentally hitting the volume control button when holding it, check out the Volume Control app. Most used apps for me is still facebook, shazam, tapatalk, and digg. |

| Must have's:
Games:
Robo Defense
Void Defense
Missile Intercept
MAD
Applications:
Advanced Task Killer (must HAVE! Set to kill unwanted apps every 30 mins to hour, saves battery, memory, maybe your life!)
Android System (gives you nice info about your phone)
Antennas (shows you what tower your connected to via google maps)
Barcode Scanner (scan any barcode, see if its cheaper)
BackCountry Navigator (offline topo maps for hiking and stuff)
Compass/Compass Leveler
DropBox (if you have a dropbox account, this is a must. Download any file from yoru dropbox, sync too!)
FY Tracker (Great GPS traker for exporting walks, bikes, drives, anything)
Gmote(control your mouse via your phone, as well as music and stuff)
Google Translate
GPS Test (see speed, alt, satellites you are connected to, signal strength)
GPS Tracker (activate via SMS, uploads your position to a google map so you can see where your phone is at)
Layar (reality browser)
Network Discovery (do a scan of PC on the WIFI, scan for open ports too)
Open Table (find open table reservations, and make one in real time)
Pedometer (count your steps!)
Scanner Radio (listen to police scanners in your area)
Ustream boradcaster (stream live video from your phone to viewers)
Wheres my droid (greatest program if your phone gets lost. Text it a keyword, and it turns off silent, makes the ringer as loud as it goes, rings for 5 mins. Still cant find it? Text another keyword, and it replies with LAT/LON and then google map link to see where your phone is)
Thats all I have for now.
Enjoy

| That FY Tracker just crashes. It said to restart my phone, I did, it still does it.
Anyone suggest a good app to use as a screen that just shows news headlines? If not, maybe just your google reader headlines.
A lot of sites said get LOCALE. It sounds cool it lowers the volume or raises it based on where you are. So at work it could auto put your phone on mute, then for everywhere else it could raise the volume back. I could really use that. But they NOW want $10 for the app. There's another one for $4 in UK money :(
Any apps for controlling your home computer?

| I use Runkeeper to log my running. It uses your GPS and tracks your route, speed, incline, etc. It has a setting for cycling and other sports. I bought an armband to run with. It also automatically updates your stats to your acct on their website. Might be good for your use to track your bike riding. I have the iPhone but I know android has it as well since my friend downloaded it on her droid phone. |

| I use these
Handcent SMS.
Voice (google voice)
Curvefish Widgets
They make some good selection widgets and task killer.
EStrong File Explorer
OI File Manager
Waze
Launcher Pro (fedrico Carnales)
Twidroid for Twitter
Quick Settings (sergej Shafarenka)
Rings Extended (dianne Hackborn)
ConnectBot
I try to not have to many apps. It eventually just lags the phone out when you got a bunch of un-used stuff.
There is a bunch of other stuff I use that comes with my rom, that you can't install without Root access. Like my Wireless tethering. Need Root for that. |

| I switched to Twicca for Twitter.
I've been playing "Angry Birds" a physics game where you launch different birds at buildings to blow up the pigs that keep stealing their eggs.
It's very addicting.
There are lots of levels too, so you can play for a week and still not be done with stage 1 which has like 70 levels. It's not easy either.

| - angry birds
- clockR widget
- smart shortcuts - helps you clean up clutter on homescreen by grouping apps
- callend vibrate - vibrates your phone when call ends, similar to vibration on call start
- appbrain - i like this better than default market app
- juiceplotter - graphs battery level vs time. useful if you're trying to change settings to optimize battery
- Google chrome to phone - probably my favorite app if you use chrome as your main browser. Can install extension for chrome and send links to phone with click of button. Awesome for sending maps/directions to phone
- My Tracks - I use this for hiking
if you root:
- setcpu
- wifi tether
- root explorer

if you don't use google voice, consider it. if your phone plan includes any 'free' numbers, you can make most of your calls for no charge through google voice. |

I love DoggCatcher to listen to podcasts. I drive a lot during the week and it is nice that it auto grabs stuff when I am on WiFi. Highly configurable too.
I mostly listen to the Linux Action Show, TWiT, and Bombcast (the last one being my favorite). I used to listen to Major Nelson's podcast, but I got bored of that. |

Generally (unless you're really lucky) you have to root your phone.
You can get details how to do here:

You know, I tried a ton of the ones that they have out there both for iPhone and Android. IMHO they all suck.
My firm is actually developing a fitness app that I think will blow away ANYTHING out there. Sadly, it's not going to be ready for a while =(. We're guesstimating it will be in beta around April.

| I'm surprised I didn't get a notice about this post.
No, I don't honestly expect it to be for a while.
We could put out something simple initially but have largely decided we'd rather put out a very premium app when we finally do and sadly its not the first thing on our priority to get out.
The app will essentially be a complete system to help manage diet, fitness, medication, test results, etc, etc. There's a ton of research going into it for formulas that are literally cutting edge (I correspond with the guys who made Gatoraid and MuscleTech products on a lot of this research --- aka the guys from University of Florida).
In the mean time, the best thing out there IMHO is an app called JeFit. It's not nearly on the level of what we plan to put out, but IMHO, its the best alternative NOW.
If you have any interest in getting some help with a little more planning, I wouldn't mind helping. I'd consider it some practical research =). |
