I saw some of the auctions this weekend in Arizona on SPEED channel.
The Mustang is such a boring platform. I'm from Texas, and it's almost like they give people Mustangs when they get their learner's permits down here. No joke, 4 of my neighbors on my street own some version of a Mustang. Yawn.
They're very boring, and even the Shelbys and GT's only add more "go straight" power. The platform in general doesn't handle well. Even the Camaro is a better car.
Well I have to say I own a 2011 GT500 Shelby with the SVT Performance package and it isn't just a "go straight" car and it out-handles and out performs any Camaro made to date, it even outperforms the base Corvette and the Grand Sport corvette which is designed on a supposedly "true" Racecar platform.
That prototype 2013 GT500 was one of the testcars that broke several records out there in Nurburgring Germany where it embarrassed Chevy's supposed Ace in the hole Camaro ZL1.

I didn't really post that extremely well. I meant the styling. The way the car looks is not my style.
I will admit that the more you go "up the ladder" with the Mustangs the better the car gets. A GT500 with SVT is an absolutely insane car. The Saleen Mustangs have all the performance in the world.
It's s very "plain" sportscar. The new'ish retro styling is an improvement over the last body style, but I think I'm jaded by the fact I see some version of that car (new and old body style) about 200 times a day.
I hate how there are so many Mustangs too M0rb0 but that is just a measure of what a great car it is. My whole family works for and retired from Ford. My first new car was a 1999 S281 Saleen that I sold to buy my GT500. That Saleen felt like a snail in comparison. I wasn't a fan of the 05-09 body style but I like the 10-12 body style (hate the new '13 rear end). Either way mine looks much different from the base body style because of the different hood, front and rear facia and the fact it is a convertible and I installed the same Saleen speedster package I had on my '99 Saleen. You can see pictures of it Here.
Nothing about a corvette is a "straight line car" Signum666 and the Shelby is designed as a track car not a drag car. The base Camaro is the only one you listed that is really a traditional drag car and even that has gotten much better around a track. The days of the Big 3 creating muscle cars that only do well in a straight line are over.
There is a reason Ford refuses to put larger rear tires on the Shelby than 285 in the rear which people really want to increase their drag times and that is because it increases understeer which fucks up the steering precision.
The Eagle F1 G2 Supercar tires that come on the SVT performance package were designed by Ford and Goodyear to be the ultimate track tire not a drag tire.
You wont find a $50-$60K or cheaper stock car that beats a 2011+ GT500 around a track, it isn't until you get into the Z06, GTR, or 100K+ exotics that you get an appreciable gain over the GT500 on that front.

I would agree the corvette is far from a "straight line" car. The corvette remains as one of the best sports car on the market. The ZR1 is competitive with Ferarris and Astons for about a third of the cost. Problem is it's a very un-engineered experience. Very raw.
I love the old mustangs (64-75), so I don't hate the entire platform. I've never manuvered in a newer Mustang, so I can't speak to that end, but I trust your evaluations. I'm sure the newer Mustangs have improved a lot, and maybe my assessment of a "straight line" car was more based on the previous generations.
Styling wise, however, still doesn't do much for me. I will say, hhowever, the GT and Cobra versions add enough to the styling to make it better.
Yeah Ford is really making leaps and bounds in it's latest generations of Mustangs from a technology and engineering standpoint. The older gen Mustangs were admittedly dogs and the platform and engine lagged behind quite a bit.
Either way I find European styling to be very stale and Japanese design is just obnoxious(exception being the GTR). My favorite styling is Italian but their durability is nonexistent not to mention the cost is way out of my league.
