AOLers
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on February 25th, 2004 @ 6:17PM

The years go by and they don't get any smarter. AOLER typically means a complete computer newbie. =[ I wish there was a way to filter people by years of experience on the internet. Someone on another comment thread really nailed it. The reason the internet sucks today is because they made it so easy for any idiot to get on. Back in 1994/1995/1996 etc, it was a pain in the ass. I remember having to spend 2-3 days to get it working. Now any chump can go to their school or library and they're online making things difficult for us.

Someone needs to create a program that automatically translates AOLER speach into english. This program should work for web pages, chat rooms, and anywhere else online. Morons who cannot type normal words are the worst offense to the internet.

Yeah, they are Dragon.

Even though I am semi-new to the internet, meaning I`ve only personally had it since about 1998, I do recall going to my friends house and waiting hours to get online, and having one hell of a time getting anywhere. Now with the cable, and all the other fancy things, every moron can use the internet; thus the intelligence level of it has dropped drastically.

I think all the cool people should post their first internet stories.

I remember in `94 when my dad`s friend from the office tried getting the internet working on my crappy mac, and he could never get it working quite right, and that silly monkey noise kept on coming up (for everyone who`s used an old school mac, you know) and eventually he started getting so mad that he couldn`t access the internet he starting cussing out the monkey. Pretty funny.

Eeeek!

Sunavyek: I`ll take up your offer, although my story isn`t that interesting.

1st time on net: At the Ontario Science Centre in 1994(grade 6). I looked up cheat codes for Primal Rage and FX Fighter.

1996 (Grade 8)- Got compuserve for my 486 w/ 28.8 modem. I looked up then *printed out* cheat codes for Primal Rage, FX Fighter, and War2.

1998: Played my first online game (Starcraft). The only games I have played online since then are AOE 2 and War3.

Three cheers for frivolous nostalgia!

Back in '94, instead of IM, people in school would use the unix talk command. I do remember trying to dial in for hours and just getting busy signals using a 14.4 baud modem. I'm glad for broadband!

I started using the net in about '94 or so. Back then, I pretty much HAD to use AOL; it was the only thing available to me. Connecting at a blazing 14.4 on our 28.8 and being charged per minute. After getting CenturyTel dialup service, we got speeds up to 26.6. I used to frequent a chatroom by the name of Rockweb. Those were the days, I tell ya.

I remember trying to play War2 over dialup with a friend of mine, and spending hours upon hours trying to get it to work right. It came down to the simple issue that he used a 14.4 modem whilst I was using a 28.8. I had to connect at 14.4 for it to work.

Oh man! I remember when Prodigy first came out. I think that was 92. It was slow to connect but it was very easy to get logged on and running. It did require expirence but since I knew what I was doing I did not have to take 3 days to get online.

Ah, the good ol` days of War2 via modem connect...I remember that. Those were the days...it still even worked with one of my friends, who had a 5600 baud modem. I think that at the time I had a 14.4, but even at 5600 it was still playable. Bet you can`t say that about most current games. ;)

The thing that pisses me off the most about AOL is the email system. The AOL email program doesn`t include a copy of the original email when you reply to someone. So trying to carry on a conversation with an AOLer means I`m constantly asking them to copy and paste the original email when they reply, so I know what the hell they`re talking about. And half the time, they yell at me because they don`t feel that they need to follow basic internet etiquette. They`re basically saying "Yeah, I`m a newbie, I`m a loser, I`m rude, and it`s all your fault."

As for the internet, it`s scary that I can actually remember a time before the internet (as we know it) existed. The only things that existed were BBSes, and private networks. When the internet actually came into being, I (naturally) started playing games online. People nowadays have no idea how easy they have it. All you need to do is launch the game and select the multiplayer menu. Back in the 90`s, you needed to use a PPP dialer to connect to the internet, then you needed to manually configure KaliDOS to recognize that connection. Finally, you could play the game. Quake 1 on an 8 player server over a 14.4 connection....sweet!

God, configuring anything back then was awful. Does anyone else remember having to set up modem init strings to get games to work correctly?

My first "real" online gaming experience was Air Warrior, on GEnie, years and years ago.

Bah. I was on the Internet before there was a world wide web. My experience in sixth grade involved a teletype and a very excited school librarian telling us we were seeing someone type from a computer in New York somewhere. Way back in 1983. We had just gotten an Apple //e and played with that 2400 baud modem a bit. Much easier than a teletype.

From a tech support point of view AOL and the people who use it are a pain. I deal with people daily who have cable or DSL and still think that AOL is the internet and they have to sign in. AOL support doesn`t seem to be so great either, they like to blame the computer manufacturer. I`ve gotten to the point where it`s test the modem in hyperterminal and if that works they can format and recover to get the original AOL working, or call back AOL ro get that "optimized" crap limping along.

This strange sort of "internet slang" started with the l33T people.. In holland we have a simular thing, we call it the BrEeZaH language.

This strange language evolved from 13-17 year old people (mostly female). It was cool to spell your name in all different caps, and with replacment of letters (A = 4 for example). It went wrong with the beginning of chatboxes, every person in life can pretend to be something he is not on the internet. Normally ugly people would be ignored in society, but these day those people have their way of life on the internet. You can see them in chatboxes going under the name "coolguy17" or "hotchick19". This way, ugly people would be able to satisfy their ego.

It even went worse when SMS started evolving. In holland for example, we have TMF (something like MTV). You can send messages to TMF using you mobile phone, and it would be displayed on TV.

Also, we have CU2.nl (don`t know if there is a US version). On this website, you can create your own sort of profile with information and pictures about yourself. Here you can find the most of the BrEeZaH culture.

The reason we call it BrEeZaH, is because of CU2.nl. The persons using this alternating caps form of language, mostly filled in that their favorite drink is Bacardi Breezer.

If you want an example of how bad the internet is filled with idiots.. go to a chatbox, hide yourself under the name of "SexyGirly18". Wait 5 minutes, and you will probably have 5 guys talking private to you. Within 10 minutes you can get their Hotmail account to use with Messenger. Within 15 minutes, you can see him on his webcam.. And he will even show his dick! (There was actual proof somewhere on the internet, but it was removed.. the guy became public, haha)

It`s something like Talk the Talk, if you can speak BrEeZaH language.. then you are a part of a special internet society. And that is what ugly people want! ATTENTION!

You can see these people everywhere, except for on the streets. There are complete researches going on about these people. Try to find something of it on Google, you will be amazed!

Example of BrEeZaH females;

Grab your chair..

Strange people..

Yeah, those were the days. You could actually find decent webpages since there weren`t so many (and hence you didn`t have to sort through all the crappy free geocities pages with huge text and hot pink backgrounds).

I remember when everything was still bulletin boards too. I used to log onto Sierra`s sometimes to download walkthroughs to some of their games.

modem init strings were the bane of my existence. I was in 6th grade trying to play war2 with a friend of mine and we had the hardest time trying to get my modem to work correctly. My first real online game was quake 2, and I used a dialup modem until about the time quake 3 came out.
