New Computer?
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on September 3rd, 2010 @ 10:04PM

I just upgraded my computer it seems like but I can barely run StarCraft II. I have to run it at worst settings and it lags and I'm last to load etc. I have a Nvidia 8800 GTX.

Also, yesterday I think my power supply is about to go. It's making a bad sound.

Anyone have recommended

  • PC Case
  • Power Supply
  • Video Card

    ?

  • THIS Was my Power Supply, only lasted from 6/17/2008 - Looks like it has a 5 year warranty here.
  • I have a Intel Core2 Dou CPU E8400 @ 3.00 GHz
  • 2 GB Ram
  • Windows 7

    Mf-er, 2nd computer blew
    Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on January 25th, 2010 @ 7:47PM

Update - So finally months later I put a new power supply in. I connected the video card to a splitter cable built for it (supposed) and the thing started catching fire again. It burnt the cable and massive smoke. Soooo. I'd guess the motherboard is a problem too. The computer wouldn't start up until the video card was powered, then it was powered for 10 seconds until it blew. haha. Luckily this is the 2nd computer and not my main. I still have a laptop as a backup 2nd computer. This is also the computer that was having so many problems I ended up replacing everything and starting over.

    Original Post
-So I accidentally left it plugged in after first discovering it was all burnt, and later in the day I hear a pop and smoke starts pouring out of the power supply. Never seen that. FUNNY! Luckily it didn't catch fire or anything.

-I just got another monitor for it, redid it in Windows 7 and even bought a Windows 7 for it. I wake up today and the damn thing smells like burnt plastic. At least it's not my main computer. Hopefully it's just the power supply. I have two other ones.

    Windows 7 Question

I installed War3/SC1/WoW as I was logged on to administrator. I have a kids profile and I want to enable those games on it. How can I do it? The only way I can get them to run is to "run as another user" then run them under my admin account while logged into his profile.

I totally recommend Microsoft Security Essentials
    Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on December 5th, 2009 @ 7:37PM

It's free and it's been working way better than POS Symantic/Norton. http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

MS Security Essentials is showing a lot of promise. I'm going to play around with it some more but so far it looks like a viable alternative to Avast (if we're strictly limiting the scope of anti-virus apps to those that are free).

I`ve been using it--works pretty well and doesn`t slow things down which is a priority for me since there are no children or non-tech people here.

    Ok bought a Router
    Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on November 29th, 2009 @ 5:55PM

I got my dad a WGT 310 N, sadly $99 at Best Buy. We did have a $20 off coupon though. I hooked it up and the strength seems a little better than my WGT 45. I did not put any custome firmware on it. I think if anyone else had to work on it, it might be a pain for them.

We were able to get my dad's second laptop finally connecting to the router. The problem was that it was set up to work on a proxy at his school and you had to disable that under Tools -> Internet, etc.

I still have the original firmware on my router. People keep saying to use tomato (?) instead. Why? Will it speed things up or something?

Continue reading "Ok bought a Router" ...

It sounds like you're looking to save some cash so if you're wanting an N-based Linksys router, you're basically have two options:

    * Wireless-N Home Router (WRT120N) - $39.99 Black Friday deal at Newegg (LINK)
    * Wireless-N Broadband Router (WRT160N) - $59.99 at Newegg (LINK)

Hopefully that narrows the field for you.

EDIT: My bad, didn't see that you can't buy it online. Best Buy has the WRT160N for $60.

    DSL
    Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on November 25th, 2009 @ 8:21PM

I finally got wireless going at my dads. It took 3 hours. I tried last year but the setup was well beyond my skills. This time google sure helped.

We figured it out. It was very complicated. I had to follow All this and I still had problems because I didn't figure out I needed my dad's login/pass from AT&T inputted into my router setup. Once I did that, it all worked.

    Original Post
My dad has a DSL modem. When I try to route it through a router, the internet won't pass through. I tried two different routers. If you run a direct line from it to the computers, it works fine. The modem is Motorola MSTATEA. I've got no idea what the issue is.

I got major infected with trojans. I used Spy Bot & Malaware to try to remove them. They even infected Spy Bot somehow. They hijacked google search. They hijacked Windows Security Center and pop up a fake message about being infected. I was trying to do Windows (XP) update and then it got in a state where it blue screens all the time. That could be the trojan still. I reinstalled windows (repaired) and now I'm trying to still get rid of that trojan. Nortin Anti Virus sucks, it didn't even find it.

I started using the power down option after 1 hour for the hard disk. Then Windows kept getting stuck on a screen where it would say "The system is starting up." then never start up. It had the same problem with safe boot too. So now I have to install again. :(

My laptop started blue screening for some reason. It does it every time now.

My 2nd computer decided to no longer turn on the monitor. Not sure why. It's ANCIENT and has been used for 5+ years. So I have to try to rebuild it with 2nd parts.

So out of 3 computers, only 1 works and it blue screens. I hate computers.

Now I just need to figure out how to access my Documents and Settings folder on my infected main drive. When I try to access it, it's access denied. I remember this problem last time.

I'm working on installing WoW. AV deleted almost all my .exe files to get rid of the virus :(
