I really like war movies. Usually they are more WWII movies, and Vietnam movies than anything else. You get the best selection of these movies on TNT, but also on WTBS and AMC.

Vs Japs

Run Silent, Run Deep(1958)(B&W)
Clark Gable, Burt Lancaster, Don Rickles, Jack Warden. The goal is to sink a destroyer that had sank plenty of subs. One of the early if not the first good sub movies. By far, I think ship WW2 movies are the most exciting esp. submarines. This movie must have influenced Crimson Tide, it has a struggle for power, famous shooting up of items to make ships think the sub was hit, depth charges, you name it. Even a sub vs sub battle. Great movie.

Torpedo Run(1958)
Ernest Borgnine, Glenn Ford. This movie is even more exciting and well made than the RSRD. There is a trip through a mine field, plenty of destroyer vs sub action, a sub to sub rescue, and the goal of this mission is to sink a flatop. Much more hard hitting than RSRD. In this one, the captain has to sink a bunch of civilians.

Operation Pacific(1951)(B&W)
John Wayne. Another Sub picture. This one is kinda funny because they have the crew watching Run Silent, Run Deep. This sub one is good because it hsa John Wayne. It is kinda suspensful because the torpedos keep going bad and not hitting their target. Pretty good movie.

In Harm's Way(1965)(B&W)
John Wayne. Kirk Douglas. Henry Fonda. Carroll O'Connor. Larry Hagman. It's John and the same chick from Operation Pacific 14 years later.. Interesting. The movie starts out with the attack on Pearl Harbor. Kirk Douglas turns out to be some sicko. John Wayne is trying to bring back his son who he abandoned. His son is a prick but not as big of a prick as his boss played by Patrick O'Neal who was in Under Siege and died in 1994. Here is something funny, Dana Andrews is in the movie. He's the guy from that movie I love Hot Rods to Hell The wussy dad. George Kennedy is in there of the Naked Gun & Breath Asure fame. Burgess Meredith is also in it. The name won't be familiar but his face will. He was the Penguin in the original Batman show, he's been in tons of movies Including some Twilight Zones. He died in Sep 97 of alzheimer's disease. He was doing movies right up to his death. He was Mickey in the Rocky movies.. The movie starts with the Pearl Harbor battle. There is a neat Destroyer vs Sub thing. This time it's us vs the sub. There is some ground fighting. A bunch of politics, a little romance. A rape, suicide. Then later on there is a air battle. Then my favorite part, the PT boats. It's about 3 hours long. Kinda a sad ending.

PT109(1963)
Cliff Robertson. I like this one because I love those PT boats. A fast boat that can launch torpedos and has machine guns and crap on it. This is supposed to be the story of Jack Kennedy. Great story.

Vs Germans

Guns of Navarone(1961)
What a classic. The story of like 6 guys trying to blow up 2 giant gunts before a group of destroyers have to go by them. David Niven. Gregory Peck, Antohony Quinn. Fans of the game Commandos should see some similarites between this and the game. It hugely influenced it. It's freakin awesome.

Sahara(1943)(B&W)
This is one of the greatest War movies ever. Humphry Bogart. Lloyd Bridges. It starts off with a few amercians and a tank who are retreating because their whole unit is dead. They meet up with some British and a few others and they are looking for water. They find water at a well, but there isn't a lot of it. The remainder of the movie is them fighting Germans who are trying to get the water also. Incredible movie, but make sure you have plenty of Drinks nearby, it makes you thirsty.

The Longest Day(1962)(B&W)
June 6, 1944.
John Wayne. Robert Mitchum. Richard Burton. Sean Connery. Steve Forrest. Robert Wagner. Henry Fonda. Roddy McDowall. Eddie ALbert. ALL STAR CAST. This movie is an epic. D-Day. It's about 3 hours, and it's pretty bad ass..

Hell is for Heros(1961)(B&W)
Steve McQueen. Bob Newheart is in here when he was really young. Great movie. A small unit attempts to defend a huge area of land with like 10 people. They spend the whole time trying to fake the Germans into thinking there is a large group defending the area. It's pretty funny. This is the one where they are driving around a jeep making it backfire to make the Germans think they have tanks. I'm not sure If I like the ending or not. It didn't leave a lot of closure. But then we know what happened..

The Great Escape(1963)
A two tape set. The story of a group of prisoners trying to escape a prison camp. Incredible movie, definitely worth buying or renting. Steve McQueen, James Garner, Donald Pleasence, Charles Bronson.

If you like this movie, you should also like Stalag 17.

Stalag 17(1952)(B&W)
William Holden. One of the first good movies about POWs. This movie is not only funny, it's really great. It's interesting to see all the skams they came up with to fool the Germans. The main plot is about a Rat they have in the Barracks. I like this because the rat gets whats coming to him.

Where Eagles Dare
Richard Burton. Clint Eastwood. This is an incredible movie. It's filled with non stop action, suspense, and a pretty tricky plot. They parachute into enemy territory and try to infiltrate a castle with a cable car. It's easy to see this movie was a huge inspiration for the game Commandos.

The Big Red One(1980)
The story of a bunch of infantry guys. Stars Lee Marvin, Robert Caradine (mr revenge of the nerds) and even has Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamil. It follows the group through a few campaigns including africa, italy and D-Day. Memoriable scenes, include a lady having a baby in a tank, Germans faking like they are dead to do an ambush, GIs burying themselves in the sand, to let tanks and soldiers go over them. They have a battle in the middle of a Mental Retard hospital, and the retarded people are eating during the battle like nothing is going on. Pretty funny. And the group of guys trying to take the D-Day beach head by stringing a line of pipes with some sort of torpedo. One after another gets it...
