8/11/11
She won her 3rd fight. She's chased 3 cats away so far. We just let her lose like a dog and say go get em. Now why are the cats all here? Cuz of our dumb bird feeder that attracts 30+ birds.
8/8/11
Kitty won her first fight. There is this annoying cat that wanders around the neighborhood and gets into everyone's stuff. She goes into every garage, patio, house area. Sits on people's houses. This cat wandered into our patio and killed a bird. Then I hear our girl cat hissing/moaning and we opened the door and let her chase the evil cat (mittens). Our cat went over to it and puffed her tail up and her hair on her back. She got mittens to lay down in front of her. Then she lunged at it. The cat ran up the fence and away. I'm hoping it stays away but it's been back twice.
2/24/11
The cat is totally awesome now. I spend 45 mins to 1 hour petting her a day maybe. I play fallout and she sits on my lap. She likes my 2nd computer chair and always sits besides me. When anyone sits there she sits behind them or waits until they leave and then takes her chair back.
If anyone sleeps she goes and lays next to them.
She's so lazy though. She starts her naps about 6 p.m. and naps all the time until the next day.
The only super annoying thing she does is walk on you when you're sleeping or bites people (but not me hah).
8/30/10
The cat is pretty great now. Ever since July 27th she's improved a lot. She now comes down off her cat tower and lays next to you whenever you go to sleep. You can even call her and she'll come (for that reason only). She'll let you pet her on the bed or on her cat tower but otherwise won't let you touch her. Once she leaves the bedroom she'll always run if you get near her or try to pet her. It's strange. Hopefully she'll improve in that area next. She'll now not run when you get near her sometimes, but often runs away. She also doesn't run under the bed as much. If the kids really bug her she'll run under the bed.
8/10/10
The cat now has no problem getting up on our bed and trying to walk on us while we sleep or even trying to sleep between people's legs. It's super annoying. I pick her up and put her off the bed a lot. She also has no problem letting you pet her on the bed and sometimes on her new cat tower. But 9/10 during the day she runs away if you hold out your hand and walk to her.
She found the couch for the first time and has started to sit there on the couch.
She even let M. Bacon (new name for my daughter) pet her.
The other night she went into the boy's room and the mom (she doesn't like her nick) shut the door and the cat was trapped in the boy's room. Well after a while I heard this loud scratching and the cat was upside holding it's paw out under the door, trying to get it open. Super funny. That woke up M.Bacon and she wanted to come out and see if the kitty was ok. haha.
7/9/10
Update 2: Went to Petco and got some NATURE'S MIRACLE PET Stain/Odor remover. That's what I used on the rabbits and it worked great. So far it's doing a great job. I just got to get the smell out so I can have it dry cleaned. F-ing cat. The problem was that I got the new litter box below but the instructions with the box were completely different than the ones on the extra litter bags. So I needed to follow the ones on the bag. I didn't wait enough before swapping out the old litter box and the cat decided to shit on the bed instead of using the new box. I thought it WAS using the new box. I could tell it had been in it. Also I don't think there was enough of the litter in the new box. I used the whole bag but it almost seems like you need 2 bags. The bags are fucking $7 each too.
Fing POS cat. Least the rabbits never shit man sized turds on the bed.
Update: Cat decided to lay a GIANT SHIT all over my down comforter. This is exactly why I've never had a cat past age 12 or so. How the fuck am I supposed to get that cleaned. Take it to the dry cleaner smelling of shit? I tried to clean it using laundry soap off but it still reeks.
Petsmart had a 50% off sale and I got This Litter Box recommended by RoboKatz. (oh I get the name now). I set it up two days ago but we'll see if the cat actually uses it. It doesn't fit very well, it's kinda hovering off the ground wedged in. I hope it starts to use it.
That damn cat is getting hair all over. I finally got it to sit still long enough to get brushed. There's a $35 brush called the FURMINATOR that we're thinking about getting. I also found this fur pick up brush at Target for $5 (50% off) that REALLY picks up the fur off furniture. I'll have to note the name and repost.
Fing cat though, it runs all the time. What a $300 asshole. Least the bunnies were softer and couldn't run and you didn't have their litter int he house.
Damn cat is also eating the shit out of the carpet, It's pulled up like 20+ carpet strands.
6/27/10
Only picture I can manage to get. That's the 12x zoom too haha.
6/24/10
I was on my computer and the cat came out and looked at me, then ran back to the room. At least it's trying. It's dumb getting a cat then waiting a week for it to come out of the bedroom.
Cat is getting restless, I think it tried to climb to the top of the closet by climbing up the clothes hanging on the hangers.
Cat finally came out of the bedroom on her own. Two times. She runs back to the bedroom though.
I was about to go to bed last night and she wanders out of under the bed and starts eating dry food really loudly.
She spends like 23 hours a day under the bed.
If you have any suggestions about products to buy. I haven't had my own cat since I was like age 5-10. I was thinking one of those robot litter box cleaners. Any suggestions on those?
6/22/10
Day 3, she's under the bed all day. I left the window shade up so she could at least go look out the window if she wanted. She lets me move the head of the bed and reach down and pet her but she doesn't purr at all. Two of the kids got it to purr though.
6/21/10
Day 2 and the cat just sits under the bed. It did finally came out and drank and used the litter box. It will let you crawl under the bed and pet it before it gets bored and hides under the bed in another spot.
6/19/10
We got a 4 year old cat from the Irvine Animal Shelter. You should see that place, those animals live better than you could ever give them at home. They have entire themed rooms with better toys and things than any of us could ever provide. It's hard to feel sorry for the animals. They are super pro on their web site too, they add/remove animals very quickly. Ours is already gone off their site.
I'll do pictures sometime.
We let it inside and it's hiding under the wine rack.

| Give the cat some time to adjust. Keep the kids away from it for now. Try to sit near it for a few minutes at a time, just to let it get used to you. It may take up to a month (or more) to get the cat used to the new house/people.
We've got a cheap cat-tree from WalMart. Our cats love it. It's super wobbly, so I'd put it in a corner and secure it better than it comes from the box.
You could hide the kitty litter box, like this. That's on my list of to-do's. Seems like it'd be pretty easy and hide the stench of cat pee. |

| I grew up with five cats, and my brother and his wife have two cats. Without fail, every one of these cats was completely wild about a toy called The Cat Dancer. Basically it's a wire with a little piece of cardboard at the end. You can get them for like 2 bucks at PetSmart. Endless hours of entertainment, I swear.
A Kitty Condo as DonSlice suggested is a good idea.
You can get an igloo shaped litter box too, kind of along the lines of DonSlice's suggestion, but maybe cheaper. Everyone I've talked to about the automated cleaners say they don't work well.
Probably the best thing you can do is get a playmate for the kitty (ie, another cat). The only problem is if they don't get along, but your cat has been hanging out with other cats at the shelter and hasn't become territorial in your joint yet--so it shouldn't be a problem. The difference in care for one cat or six cats really isn't much. They pretty much take care of themselves, except for the litter box.
Good move on the pet choice. Way lower maintenance than a dog, or (from your past experience) rabbits. Cats have personalities too. You'll see.

| Awesome! I grew up with 2 cats, and actually have a housemate who has his with him now.
For things to play with, frankly mouse toys and other gimmicky things kind of suck - but the best thing for playing from time to time would be these wicker type cat toys. They're built out of wicker and have catnip inside - and they don't last forever (like most toys anyway) because the cat will slowly tear the toy apart to get at the catnip. My cats always had a lot of land to scour about outside, so indoor toys were always probably the 5th option, but those wicker mice would always get them pretty excited, maybe it was the fact that they could be broken apart made it a little more appealing.
Either way, good choice, I do really like dogs, but I just love cats so freakin much.

| My family got our first cat (since I was born, at least) when I was in kindergarten. We adopted an adult cat, maybe two or three years old, who was taken in as a stray. She really became a part of our family, I still remember the drive home after we got her, trying to come up with a name. Whenever we were all in one area she`d come in and sit in a lap or curl up on the couch. She came when you called her name or answered you with a meow. She loved to be picked up and held like a baby, and she`d gently put her paw on your nose or cheek.
We had her for 20 years, she finally passed away two years ago. She went quietly and naturally having outlived three dogs.
Wow, that really took a depressing turn, but really my point is that if you treat your cat right, she`ll have a positive influence on you and your children for the rest of their lives.
I`m also glad you chose an adult cat. Shelters have a much harder time finding homes the older an animal gets. The shelter where we adopted our cat is still there, though it doesn`t sound as nice as the one you described. I know they do the best they can, but for such a wealthy area (on average) the shelter is small and the cages are a bit small (though kept clean and well lit). |

| Highly recommend the Cat Genie litter system. The system cleans the bowl with a sanitary solution after the cat and then flushes it down either the toilet or the clothes washer drain. Never have a cat litter smell again.

| This is cheap and much cleaner and easier to deal with than litter. It`s (fairly large) clay pellets on top of a grate with a big tampon underneath. Change the pad once every few weeks and scoop out the droppings. The pellets don`t break apart and aren`t dusty, and they fall through the holes on the scoop so you don`t ever really need to add any.
You just have to be diligent about scooping the droppings into the toilet (it`s not as good a desiccant as real litter, so they can smell more), but then you can just flush it since there aren`t hunks of litter involved. |

| I'm going to second what Don said about the cats adjusting. They take time to figure out whats going on. Loud noises and children will have them scared for a while. So, they will just stay where they feel safe for a long time. Eventually they will come out.

Keeps? Like he keeps doing it after you tell him to stop? Sounds like you don't smack that kid enough! Shine it in HIS face a couple of times to let him know what it is like. It would probably change his mind enough to prevent him from doing it, or at least he would have a hard enough time seeing to be able to point it in the cat's face afterward.

Problem was, the cat was used to her regular box and refused to use it. We had both boxes side by side for a while. Then took her old one away and left only this one. She refused to use it up until she almost shat herself. Poor thing was crying she had to go so bad. I actually had to sit there and calm her down to make her use it. |

I wouldn't put up with a cat that pitched loaves on my bed, that thing would live in my garage or outside.

| Cats are hit and miss from my experience. Sometimes they're nice, sometimes they're just bitchy, depends on the cat.
My friend has 3 cats and his girlfriend has 2 cats, and they all have distinct personalities:
Jack - complete princess asshole (for example: the other cats have to cover up his smelly shit, he won't be bothered with it.)
Benetar - big and lazy. He's the only one that can put up a good fight with Snaggletooth.
Maller - high strung, dog in training. (plays fetch with straws/mice) Smart enough to figure out that the light is coming from my hand, and not just a dot on the floor.
Rook - Always looking out the window wanting to hunt something.
Snaggletooth - playful/bully and always wants attention from humans. He's smart enough not to fuck with Jack though.
My old roommates had two cats:
Jade - The only reason you will ever pet her is because she's too fat and lazy to run. I also swear she was friendlier to me when my roommates were gone, and would always run from me when they were home.
Littles - High strung. Always hid from guests, and never warmed up to me after 3 years. If I even looked at her, she would run and hide.
My brothers cat:
Trouble - didn't want to be picked up, but if you got a hold of her, she wouldn't care.

| You might be better off returning it to the shelter and getting a kitten if you`re not already attached to it. It`s fairly difficult for some cats to re-adjust to new surroundings/lifetyle. It might not be the type of cat that is good around children and such, but then again, it might just take more time for it to warm up. I`m a strong believer in going to the pound and letting the animal select you. Find the one that is the most outgoing/friendly towards you AND the kids. That is the one that you want. We have found the most adorable cat that way. It is the friendliest animal that I`ve ever known (and that`s saying something since I grew up with several very friendly cats and dogs). She essentially acts like a dog and follows you around all day. She isn`t afraid of company or anything, although she has been slightly afraid of some non-white people. |
