Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on September 21st, 2011 @ 1:01AM

9/21
OK beat it. Lame last boss fight. Never got a chance to buy anything the last several levels other than the LIMP clinic.

9/20
Got to the boss on mission 20 of 21 (according to gamefaq) or the mission before the last mission. I just did typhoon on them 3 times. I'm almost done. I wish they'd let me go back to town and spend my money. I realize that if I hacked more I'd have more points to spend :( I really had no idea how to spend my points and you just burn yourself so bad when you don't.

9/19

Deus Ex: Human Revolution; Boss Fights Were Outsourced - Maybe that's why the 2nd one completely broke for me (chick just stands there and takes hits). First boss I got stuck 1 1/2 hours. 2nd boss (I think) died super easily. 3nd Boss? it just stood there and let me kill them. I walked around looting everything and then slowly shot them until they died.

Youtube comment: "No wonder the boss battles were so incredibly bad and didn't fit at all with the experience. You don't outsource important parts of the game to people that don't know jack about it!"

"Unless, like so many who played the original Deus Ex, you built a non-lethal/stealth character. In that case every boss fight winds up being an atrocious piece of design that completely goes against what the entire rest of the game says: that you can build your character and have the freedom that you want. That's why so many are complaining about the boss battles, because they're so contrary to the rest of the game and completely ignore what you've done."

Earlier

I played all weekend. I'm on mission 20 of 21. I always feel like I spent my points all wrong. I don't have enough points to get all the things I need. I have a bunch of money but they've left me nowhere to shop. I guess I should have got that increased jump way earlier and the double takedown.

I haven't got Typhoon yet. I upgraded the pistol like you said but there's never any ammo and they never let you shop.

What is up with the batteries. If you buy more batteries you only ever get to refil the first battery and there's never any items to restock your other batteries (almost never).

I don't see how I'm going to get all these points to upgrade before the game ends. I guess I missed tons of experience by just shooting people.

9/16

Got stuck on a boss for 1 1/2 hours cuz I spent my points wrong. :(

9/15

I got the game on XBOX360 from the library. Wiki.

I'm having trouble with the controls. In other games like Gears, it's easy to shoot from cover but this one you have to hit one button then move the stick forward to zoom in. It's so much easier in Gears or Mass Effect 2.

I have 0 patience for the sneaking around crap. When I have 2 hours to play I don't have time to spend 45 mins sneaking one room.

Looting is kinda a pain.

What points should I spend in? "probably on combat.
If you don't have damage resistance and recoil reduction, boss battles are a huge hassle"

9/16

  • OK I'm 4 hours into it. I got a sniper rifle and it has no sight on it. No matter what I hit on the controller it has no aiming sight? Any tips?

I put points in the Conversation, 1 battery recharge, see through walls, punch through the wall.

I can`t understand why you keep buying bad ass games for the console when they almost always run better/have better quality/better controls on PC.

Of all people I`ve always thought you were pro PC.

If you're going to hack, get the hack captures up to 5 (I'd stop at 4 until you reach the second hub) and then all the stealth hack augments and that's it. All the other hack augments are worthless.

Get the social augment as soon as possible and pay attention to the alpha/beta/omega readouts. Use pheromones, win every conversation you want.

The wall break arm augment is pretty solid because there are at least a couple places in the game where you can get a Praxis from using it, so it pays for itself.

The Icarus augment owns. Don't have to worry about falling dmg and it saves you time.

Definitely pick up the EMP resist augment, makes a few things way way way easier.

The aiming augments are pretty worthless since the laser sights are so insanely great in this game. The only one kinda worth it is the recoil reducing one if you're going to lug around a heavy machine gun.

Upgrade the regular pistol as much as you can, it's a MONSTER when fully upgraded. Armor piercing rounds and you can 1shot headshot most of the enemies in the game. With a laser sight it's just disgusting.

Depends on what you're talking about. I go Call of Duty because there are more players + less hacks.

I went Fallout on console cuz they had a Black Friday deal of $40.

I went Deus Ex: Human Revolution on xbox cuz it was free at the library. They didn't have PC.

I went BF3 on PC cuz I want to get back to PC.

My TV is the best, if you saw how great it look, it looks better than my monitor often. I can even run my PC on it too.

Heh, I tried sneaking around for a short while and ultimately got frustrated with it and opted for the run and gun approach. The silenced sniper and shotgun is all I need to clear any obstacle.

Playing through on the med setting and so far it's a breeze. I'll likely try going for the stealth achievements on hardest next.

I recommend the aug that lets you see through walls and enhanced radar. Not only does it help you pinpoing enemy movement but it also helps you identify collectible objects which may be overlooked in the gold-tinted art style.

Honestly I'm having a hard time really getting into this game and find it rather drab. Kinda just playing through it to beat the game at this point.

I played through this on stealth. It`s not really that hard. There are a few points where you`ll need to be careful not to get spotted but only if you want the Ghost/Smooth Operator bonuses.

I generally agree with hj. I also fully upgraded my pistol. Honestly, there`s no real reason for other weapons except for like boss fights, and they usually provide you with ample weapons just prior to boss fights to win those.

I`d also say: get anything that lets you cloak longer. Even if you aren`t playing that stealthily, it`s a good idea. Ignore the stealth tree itself though. All it does it give you some sense of what the enemies see or hear, but you should have a good sense of that pretty early in the game.

The social augment isn`t necessary as you can pretty much win all the arguments anyway. However, it`s necessary for a couple of achievements, so I guess that really depends on your goals.

Also, jumping higher is great. Once you`re awash in Praxis in the end-game, I`d also get the air breather upgrades. Being able to survive gas is meh, but the longer running options are great. The faster sprint option, by comparison, is a waste of an investment.

Not sneaking is like cutting out half the content of the game. :(

But for assault, get the icarus landing system (icon looks like a parachute), obviously damage resist, quick regen on batteries/more batteries/double takedowns (if you use takedowns which I would highly suggest). Hacking really isn't necessary if you're going full assault. You rarely need to hack in the game, and if you do, they usually give you unlocking devices somewhere nearby. The EMP shield is pretty necessary, especially for a boss fight. Makes one of the later areas so much easier to navigate as well.

Mine templates are your friend. Stock them, save them. You combine them with grenades to make whatever type of mine the grenade is. So like template+frag=frag mine. They're incredibly powerful and easier to control/game than the grenades are. And always try to use your environment to your advantage; the game is more tactical than people give it credit for when playing it full assault. Never underestimate the potential of throwing shit at people. You can pick up large objects (with the str aug that I would highly suggest) and drop them to use as cover. Stuff like refrigerators and dumpsters. Throwing them is usually a one-shot kill but drains batteries quick. Or just throw it across the room and run to it, mobile cover. You just threw a big block of cover across the room. That's awesome.

The cloaking aug actually comes in handy just to get to a better position in a pinch sometimes, too.

I don't know what the controls would be for a controller, but the sniper rifle does have a built-in sight. Does it say in the pause menu somewhere, like a controller map?

As a note, if someone is on the other side of a wall, you will automatically take them out when you break through the wall.

I found the sniper aiming. It was press in the right stick. But the controls are so bad. It's HOLD to cover, press forward to aim your gun out, THEN press the stick for the sniper aim. So bad.

Yeah at least on the PC version you can change the controls.

I have no idea why you'd keep hold to cover. I prefer toggle cover.

First boss you just throw stuff at him. There's barrels all over the room. :p

For the first boss, I just would cloak, run away, headshot him a bunch with my upgraded pistol, rinse, and repeat.

It didn`t even take very long.

Still, the bosses stick out like a sore thumb in this game.
Also, sounds like the console had questionable controls. I liked the PC release`s controls, personally.

1st Boss was easy once you figured out what to do

    --- Spoilder ---

Just throw the gas tank at him to keep him stunned and toss a few explosive barrels at him. They keep him subdued and neither of you need to ever fire a round. Start off with a conc nade to get the chain started.

For the first boss all I did was hit him with an EMP, unload a rifle clip. Hit him with an EMP, unload a rifle clip. Dead. First try, took me 40 seconds maybe?

Yeah I can imagine having to hold cover and hit 2-3 other buttons on a controller is like a miniature game of Twister.

To snipe you had to hold down left trigger, push forward on the stick, then push in the right stick to start the scope and aim WHILE THE FUCKERS ARE SHOOTING AT YOU!

So then you had to cloak, hold left trigger, push forward to aim out, and press the stick to scope, THEN aim.

    Worst controls ever.

I had so many point I had everything maxed out but bullshit stealth/hacking stuff.

I think it was because I hacked everythign I saw and got all the bonus XP in the hackign minigame every single time. I also found a handful of Praxis in the game from quests and random locations.

Yeah the battery upgrade is totally worthless man. The recharge one is ALRIGHT I guess, but it's barely noticeable when maxed out IMO. The additional batteries are absolutely useless past having 3 batteries to use the tub of energy that gives 3.

Typhoon = kill bosses in 2-3 hits. The 2nd and 3rd bosses I had fully upgraded Typhoon and the fights lasted about 10 seconds each.

The 2nd boss completely broke and was just stuck standing in a pool. I walked around slowly looting everything then fired at them whenever as they didn't respond.

Yeah, I had like a billion dollars, almost full praxis, and like infinite guns and ammo by end-game. I explored everything and got Smooth Operator and Ghost bonuses on everything, though. This also meant that I rarely killed people. I guess if you go into a lot of fire fights and don`t explore much that you could find yourself rather low on ammo.

I'm about 20 hours into the game and so bored of it. The gameplay is just redundant and monotonous. My char has a strong emphasis on hacking and gunfighting and nothing poses a challenge. I'm at a point where I'm just playing the game to beat it, but no longer get any satisfaction in doing so. It's too easy on the med. setting using combat.

I love the hacking minigame, I'm playing all stealth and I always HATE stealth games but for whatever reason I like this one. The Story is also pretty good.

It isn't the greatest game out there but is a great reasonably priced hold-me-over for Skyrim.

I have way too much money already because I disarmed the entire police force in Detroit by whacking them in the back of the head, stealing their rifle, then selling it to a gunrunner. It is so funny to see all of these police on patrol without weapons.

Yeah Blazer, sounds like you need to play on Hard.

Pretty much every game I play I jack it up to Hard. By this point in my gaming career, most games aren't balanced to be entertaining on Normal at my skill level. The Hard setting was still a bit easy, but if you mess up you'll get shredded in seconds so there's still some challenge.

I think people went in with wacky expectations. It certainly isn't CoD. Deus Ex is certainly an RPG, it just happens to be in first person.

If you're low on ammo, don't have any praxis, missing out on a lot, it's because the game is meant to be played as an RPG. Not the type of game you can just sit down and breeze through like Homefront or something. Personally I loved it, and I can't wait for the DLC.

Which ending did you guys pick the first time? I'm curious. I've been a big fan of the theme of the story for many a year now, and this is the closest thing we've gotten to an intellectual discourse on transhumanism. A video game. :p

IIRC, the last shop is at the very beginning of the Dock level.
