Katrina Victims Face Eviction From Federal Housing Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on May 23rd, 2009 @ 1:01AM Link - Yeah by this time you could get a job and start all over and have something. Illegals do it all the time! The $5.6 billion housing assistance program that provided temporary trailers and hotel rooms to victims was supposed to end in 2007. But the deadline was extended by two years to May 1 of this year to help the more than 5,000 individuals and families still struggling to rebuild their lives. (At its peak, 143,000 households along the Gulf Coast were located in temporary housing units.) We're currently facing an ugly decision -- either extending the extended program indefinitely, I guess, or discontinuing the program for 5,000 people," Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., said. Katrina fraud stretches far beyond Gulf Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on April 2nd, 2007 @ 4:39PM Link - I'm really mad and want to see some serious punishment for those aholes. I hope at least God sticks it to them. by some estimates, involve thousands of people who bilked the federal government and charities out of hundreds of millions of dollars intended to aid storm victims. • In Alabama, Lawanda Williams was sentenced to 75 months in prison for using false Social Security numbers and different names to claim losses in Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana and Florida. Her Alabama home was not damaged. Authorities say she collected $277,377 and will have to pay restitution and forfeit items she bought including real estate, a mobile home, three cars and a 50-inch TV. _In Washington, D.C., Jeffrey Alan Rothschild was sentenced to 8 1/2 years in prison after pleading guilty to trying to acquire more than $100,000 in disaster aid, and admitting other financial crimes. Rothschild created false identities, obtaining some from a legal directory. He was able to get 38 FEMA checks, using mailboxes in Florida, Tennessee, New York and Virginia. U.S. hurricane aid fraud likely tops $1 bln: report Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on December 6th, 2006 @ 11:44PM Link - That almost makes me go, f those people next time around. That's just crap. They should have some real severe punishment for abusers. The GAO cited incidents in which FEMA gave $17 million in housing assistance to individuals who had already obtained free housing in the form of trailers or apartments and $20 million that went to people who improperly claimed for help for both storms that ravaged the U.S. Gulf Coast area. :COMMENTS | HURRICANE KATRINA | DIGG
